Torrington Explorers

The intent of the Torrington Police Explorer program is to educate and involve the community’s youth between the ages of 13 and 20 in police operations and their community; the goal of the program is to provide the necessary building blocks to a successful law enforcement career and to strengthen the bonds between law enforcement officers and their community. The education aspect of the program which includes classroom and scenario-based situations, is provided by various experts in the field (including law enforcement and other government entities).  This educational piece is essential in understanding the role law enforcement has in one’s community and in the criminal justice system.

Classes include, “Introduction to the Criminal Justice System, De-escalation and its role in Communication, Accident Investigation, Domestic Violence, Narcotic Investigation, Criminal Investigation, DUI investigations, Evidence Collection, Understanding Mental Illness, Self Defense and Use of Force, Traffic Enforcement, etc.”  Over the course of the year, participants will have to volunteer for State and Community events and interact with the public under police supervision (Duties can from range from assisting with traffic/ parking, toy/food drives, and basic security functions).  Annually, the Explorer Post has participated in several competitive events again other posts in the state and has a basic academy at the end of the year where cadets have the opportunity to go through a mock police academy.
