A Public Safety Message from Chief Baldwin

The City of Torrington has been greatly impacted by Tropical Storm Isaias.  Currently, there are over 7,353 Torrington Eversource customers or 39.25% without power.  This reflects an impact to over 18,000 Torrington citizens.  The City of Torrington has not been provided information as to the specific restoration plan or estimated restoration times.  We are expecting limited Eversource crews into our community later today.  Every indication is that we will be experiencing an extended power outage for major portions of our community.  We will be forwarding updates as they are available.  We are asking residents to exercise caution and take steps to prepare for the extended outage.

The City of Torrington will be operating a charging a station in front of City Hall during business hours.  Residents are asked to bring their own charging device and limit their charging time to one hour.  Social distancing and masks must be worn while utilizing the charging stations.

Residents are encouraged to continue cautions while the power restoration efforts continue.  Any lines that are down should be considered energized and be avoided.  Many downed trees have power lines tangled in them and may be energized and dangerous.

Areas and streets that have been closed or cordoned off by emergency services should not be accessed.  Do not removed cones or tape to get around these hazards.

Residents are reminded that additional caution must be exercised when driving during these outages.  4-way signaled intersections are required to be treated as 4-way stops if no power is provided to the stop light.

Residents are reminded that we are still operating under the COVID 19 Pandemic and precautions should taken to prevent the spread via social distancing and wearing of masks.

Residents are encouraged to evaluate and implement their emergency preparedness plan.  Additional information on actions to take after a power outage can located at  www.redcross.org/prepare and or www.ready.gov
