60-Day Temporary Pistol Permit Application Process

You must be a resident of the City of Torrington to apply for a 60-Day Temporary Permit to Carry Pistols and Revolvers in Torrington.  You may pick up the application at the Torrington Police Department Records Department during regular business hours, download it here  or in the lobby of the Police Department.  Below details the Application Process.

1.Please complete 60-Day Temporary Pistol Permit Application. Click HERE for application.

2.Get the application NOTARIZED. (Do not sign it until in front of Notary)

3.Sign and Date the FBI Privacy Act Statement & Noncriminal Justice applicants Privacy Rights

4.You must provide the following when submitting your NOTARIZED 60-Day Temporary Pistol Permit Application. (WE MAKE COPIES, ALL ORIGINALS ARE RETURNED TO YOU)

  • The signed and dated “FBI Privacy Act Statement” and “Noncriminal Justice Applicants Privacy Rights” forms.
  • The certificate for successful participation in an authorized handgun safety training course.  (Refer to the State of CT website for approved courses).
  • Three (3) letters of character reference from persons known by you for at least three (3) years, who can attest to your character / suitability.  No relatives or Torrington PD Officers.
  • Photo identification (CT driver’s license with Torrington address).
  • ORIGINAL Birth Certificate or Valid United States Passport.
  • Original Immigration & Naturalization documents or certified copy if applicable.
  • Copy of DD-214 for military service, if applicable.

Applicants must submit their completed application and required documents prior to completing the background process.  Once the 60-Day Connecticut Temporary Pistol Permit Application and the FBI Privacy Act Statement/Privacy Rights Forms are submitted to the Records Department, you will be given instructions on the next steps to completing the Background Process.

Fingerprinting services are offered at the Torrington Police Department on Wednesday of each week.  The cost for the fingerprint service is $25.00 ($25.99 if paying with credit/debit card) and is NOT included in the background fees.   Appointments for fingerprinting can be made ONLY AFTER you have submitted your application and received the instructions to complete the background check by clicking HERE.  These instructions include the service code you MUST use to pre-enroll for the background check. 

Once the Chief Approves the 60-Day Connecticut Temporary Permit, you will be notified that the permit is ready for pick up at the Torrington Police Records Department.  At the time of picking up the 60-Day Connecticut Temporary Permit, you will need to pay $70.00 ($72.77 if paying with credit/debit card) which is for the 60-Day Connecticut Temporary Permit. The records department will then provide the instructions on what steps you must take to get the Connecticut Issued State Permit, that is issued by the Connecticut State Police.
