In 1990 the Torrington Police Department established an Accident Investigation Team (AIT) to investigate serious motor vehicle accidents.

The Team, which includes an Accident Reconstructionist, 4 Supervisors and 12 Investigators, provides highly technical and reconstructive services for all serious injury and fatal collisions involving commercial vehicles, passenger vehicles, bicycles, motorcycles, pedestrians and trains.

All members receive training on a monthly basis to keep current in vehicle dynamics, crush and speed analysis, occupant kinematics, 3D animation, perception/reaction, court testimony, and evidence preservation and presentation.

AIT utilizes state of the art equipment, including the LTI Mapstar laser mapping system, 3D computer drawing and animation, an extensive research library with over 150 technical books, numerous computer software titles and programs, a Vericom VC2000 computer and digital photography and imaging.
